TLISI 2018 – Teaching, Learning & Innovation Summer Institute (TLISI)

Event recap

In 2018, TLISI focused on several topic areas, including effective teaching and learning practices, inclusive pedagogies, technology-enhanced learning, Jesuit pedagogy, and cross-institutional and cross-departmental collaborations. In addition to the keynote speakers below, we welcomed Georgetown professor Yulia Chentsova-Dutton who presented data from a recent study on “Belonging on Campus.” TLISI also served as a convening for the Doyle Faculty Fellows, the Technology Enhanced Learning Colloquium, and ten interdisciplinary teams working on their own projects.

Talking About Race and Other Conversations

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President Emerita of Spelman College, is a clinical psychologist widely known for her expertise on race relations and as a thought leader in higher education. The author of several books including the best-selling Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations About Race (2017) and Can We Talk About Race?: And Other Conversations in an Era of School Resegregation (2007), Dr. Tatum is a sought-after speaker on the topic of racial identity development, the impact of race in the classroom, strategies for creating inclusive campus environments, and higher education leadership. In 2005, Dr. Tatum was awarded the prestigious Brock International Prize in Education for her innovative leadership in the field.

Mindfulness in Education: Bridging the Science and Practice of Mindfulness

Dr. Deborah Norris is Founder and Executive Director of the Mindfulness Center, a non-profit wellness center that provides charitable, educational and research programs in mindfulness and other mind-body practices. She is also the Psychologist-in-Residence and Director of the Psychobiology of Healing Program at American University. In addition, Dr. Norris is the author of In the Flow: Bridging the Science and Practice of Mindfulness (2017) and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Mind-Body Journal. Dr. Norris is an internationally recognized leader, speaker, and educator on mindfulness, yoga, and integrative mind-body medicine and renowned for her online meditation teacher training program, SOMA, The Science of Mindful Awareness.

The Direction of Diversity: Exploring Diversity and Inclusion Practice on University Campuses

Dr. Sean Eversley Bradwell joined us from Ithaca College where he is Director of Programs and Outreach. In addition to his current role, Dr. Bradwell serves as a faculty-in-residence for the Ithaca Martin Luther King Scholar Program. Following his plenary talk, Dr. Bradwell and Nicole Eversley Bradwell held a follow-up workshop titled Teaching and Learning with a New(er) Generation of Students.
